They are an unofficial convenience, not a PSiRA service, so if a result ever looks wrong, confirm it on the official portal before acting on it.

Below we walk through both checks, explain what every column in the results table actually means, and cover what to do when the search returns nothing.

PSiRA is the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority, the body that regulates private security in South Africa. It gets its mandate from the Private Security Industry Regulation Act 56 of 2001. One point worth clearing up early, because a lot of guides get it wrong. Registration is what makes you legal. Verification is only the public lookup that confirms somebody already registered. Under the Act it is a criminal offence to render a security service for reward unless you are registered, so the verification tool is how employers, clients, and officers themselves confirm that nobody is working outside the law.

What the Verification Results Actually Mean

The results table returns ten fields, and most people only read two of them. Here is what each one is telling you.

• First Name, Last Name, Gender. Confirm these match the ID document in front of you. A mismatch usually means you typed the wrong number, but it can also mean somebody is using credentials that are not theirs.
• Request Status. The state of the registration itself. Active means the person is registered and may legally render a security service.
• Registration Date. When the registration was first granted.
• Expiry Date. When the certificate lapses. Worth noting because renewal is allowed 90 days before this date, and the original expiry date is what carries over, not the date you renewed.
• Grade. The training level, from E up to A. Covered in detail further down.
• Employment Status. This is the column people misread most often. Active here means a security business has declared you as its employee. Inactive means no employer has linked you.
• Employment Company. The business that has linked you. If you are employed and this field is blank, something is wrong.
• Certificate Status. Whether the registration certificate is current.

How do you check your PSiRA Grade with your ID Number?

Checking your grade is straightforward, and there are two ways to do it.

The first is the online route described above. Run the individual verification with your ID number, either in the form on this page or on the PSiRA portal, and read the Grade column in the results table. That is the fastest method and it works without an account.

The second is by phone. Call the PSiRA Helpdesk on 086 133 3850 and ask for a status enquiry. The agent will ask for your ID number, reference number, or other identifying details, and will confirm your grade and application status once you are verified. The switchboard is 086 10 PSiRA (77472), and callers outside South Africa can use +27 12 337 5500.

PSiRA Grades Explained

The grade tells you what an officer is trained and permitted to do. The system runs from E at entry level up to A at the top, which catches a lot of people out because the lettering runs backwards to what you would expect. The grades sit under Board Notice 93 of 1995 for E through C, and Board Notice 102 of 1995 for B and A.

• E Grade is the entry point. The main function is patrol, and the course introduces the learner to the private security industry.
• Grade D covers access and gate control at the entry point.
• Grade C is a senior security officer. The function is access control in higher risk areas, plus supervision of officers on lower grades. It is also the minimum entry point for most specialised courses such as cash in transit, armed reaction, and retail.
• Grade B is a junior supervisor. Think site or shift commander, managing lower grade officers, often with documentation and basic computer work involved. This is the grade required for directors and managers of a registered security business.
• Grade A carries a managerial function over a number of people, usually a site manager controlling several functions and the security workforce.

The grades are sequential and you cannot skip one. You complete E before D, D before C, and so on. In practice, E, D, and C are what most general guarding jobs ask for, B opens up supervisory and control room roles, and A is for senior management.

When the Search Returns Nothing or Shows Inactive

Two results confuse people more than any others.

Nothing comes back at all. Check the number first, since a single wrong digit returns an empty result. If the number is right and the search is still empty, the registration either was never completed or has lapsed. Anybody rendering a security service in that state is doing so unlawfully.

Employment Status shows Inactive while you are working. Security businesses are required by law to declare their employees to PSiRA. If you are employed and your search shows Inactive with no company name, your employer has not linked you. PSiRA’s guidance is to report this immediately. You can do so anonymously by emailing complaints@psira.co.za or calling 0860 333 036. You can also check the same thing by logging into your e-PSiRA profile and clicking the member link, which shows your employer details, employee number, and start date if the link exists.

How Long Approval Takes

The registration unit now works to a turnaround of four working days for reviewing and approving applications that meet the requirements on submission.

The part that still takes time is the criminal record check. Fingerprints go through SAPS, and that step sits outside PSiRA’s four day window. Incomplete documents are the other common cause of delay, because the clock effectively stops while PSiRA waits for you to supply what is missing.

So the honest answer is this. A clean, complete application moves fast. An application with a missing document or a smudged set of prints can sit for weeks. Keep checking the verification page rather than guessing, and use the phone line if the status has not moved.

One thing to watch for new entrants. PSiRA issued a circular on 19 January 2026 covering the implementation of mandatory pre-registration for security officer training. If you are about to start training, confirm the current requirement with your training centre before you pay, because enrolling the old way can cost you the course.

Renewing Before Your Certificate Expires

The Expiry Date column in your verification result is the one to diarise. Renewal is allowed from 90 days before that date, and the original expiry date is what carries forward, so renewing early does not cost you any of your remaining validity.

To renew, log into your PSiRA profile, select Service Request, then select certificate request, and pay the renewal fee. If you want a physical printed copy, there is an additional charge and you then make an online booking to collect it. Fee amounts are updated from time to time, so check the current figure in your profile rather than relying on a number you read somewhere.

Watch Out for Fake Certificates and Fake Verification Pages

Fake PSiRA cards do circulate, which is the whole reason the public verification tool exists. Two habits protect you.

First, verify the number, not the card. A convincing looking card proves nothing on its own. Run the ID number through the individual verification page and compare the name, grade, and status that come back.

Second, know whose page you are typing that ID number into. Only psira.co.za and digitalservices.psira.co.za are official PSiRA properties. Everything else, this site included, is a third party. That is not automatically a problem, and a good third party tool saves you time, but it does change what you should expect. A trustworthy one says plainly that it is unofficial, tells you what it does with what you type, and points you back to PSiRA. A site that implies it is PSiRA, asks for a payment to run a check, or wants your password rather than just an ID number is not one to use. The official verification is free and needs no login, so any page charging for it is a red flag on its own.

Our own position on that is simple. The forms on this page are here for convenience, they are free, and they are not a PSiRA service. Where a result carries real consequences, confirm it on the official portal too.

A digital certificate has its own safeguard built in. It cannot be printed, only previewed inside the holder’s profile, and the QR code on that preview links straight back to PSiRA’s verification result. If somebody hands you a printed sheet claiming to be a digital certificate, treat it with suspicion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my PSiRA certificate? Your certificate is issued digitally once your registration is approved. Log into your profile at digitalservices.psira.co.za, go to Downloads, and preview or download it there. The digital certificate cannot be printed. If you need a physical copy, request an Ink certificate through Service Request in your profile, pay the additional fee, and make an online booking to collect it from a branch.

Can I check somebody else’s PSiRA registration? Yes. The individual verification tool is public and needs no login. Enter their ID number or PSiRA number and the result shows their registration status, grade, expiry date, and linked employer. Employers are encouraged to run this check before hiring.

Is the verification form on this page official? No. We are not PSiRA and we are not affiliated with the Authority. The forms here are a free convenience tool that runs the same lookup so you do not have to navigate the PSiRA menu. My grade is wrong in the results. What do I do? This usually means your training provider has not submitted your course report to PSiRA. Contact the training centre first and ask them to confirm the report was submitted, then follow up with the PSiRA Helpdesk on 086 133 3850 if it still has not reflected.

Verifying a security officer or a security business with PSiRA takes under a minute and costs nothing, and it is the only reliable way to know that the person or company in front of you is operating legally. Bookmark the individual and business verification pages, note your expiry date, and check your employment link every few months so that a lapsed registration never catches you out mid contract.
