How to Renew PSIRA Certificate Online? 2026 (Eight Steps)

You can renew your PSIRA certificate online at digitalservices.psira.co.za without visiting a branch. Log in to the PSIRA portal, open Service Request, choose Renewal Certificate, agree to the terms, and pay. PSIRA lists the renewal payment as R75. If you also want a printed ink certificate, you pay another R75, so R150 in total. Your R110 annual fee must be paid up first, otherwise the portal will not let you renew.

Security officer certificates are valid for 24 months from the date of issue. You can start the renewal 90 days before the expiry date, and PSIRA keeps your original expiry date, so you lose nothing by renewing early. Security businesses renew every 12 months instead.

How to Renew PSIRA Certificate Online?

Before you start, verify your PSIRA grades and check the expiry date on your record so you know exactly where you stand.

Go to digitalservices.psira.co.za and click Login.
Enter your username and password. If the details are correct, you land on your dashboard.
Click Service Request. A lot of people miss this step and assume the portal is broken.
Click the Renewal Certificate tab, then select your option. A Pay button will appear with the amount.
Read the terms and conditions and click Agree.
Choose your payment method, such as credit or debit card, bank payment, or coupon.
Enter your card number, expiry date, card holder name, and CVV, then click Pay Now.
Enter the OTP your bank sends by SMS and submit. This OTP comes from your bank, not from PSIRA, so if it does not arrive, contact your bank.

Once payment goes through, you are redirected back to the service request page and your renewal is done.

PSIRA Renewal Fees

There is no separate price for employed and unemployed officers. Everyone pays the same amounts.

PSIRA reviews its administration fees every April, so always confirm the figure shown on the payment screen before you pay. The 2026 review, for example, moved the individual registration fee from R290 to R310.

Pay Your R110 Annual Fee First

This is the step that blocks most renewals. All security officers, active and inactive, pay an annual fee of R110. If yours is in arrears, PSIRA restricts your services and you will not be able to:

Renew your PSIRA certificate
Renew your letter of good standing
Apply as a security business
Receive a printed certificate or ID card
See your full profile on the portal and the PSIRA app

Ongoing non-payment can lead to suspension or even withdrawal of your registration under section 26 of the PSIR Act. Clear the annual fee, then renew.

When You Should Renew

Two dates matter here, and most guides only mention one.

You can renew from 90 days before your expiry date. Renewing early does not shorten anything, because PSIRA keeps your original expiry date when it issues the new certificate.

The deadline is earlier than you think. Under the regulations published in Notice 874 on 11 March 2022, failure to renew a month before the anniversary date results in the certificate lapsing immediately. So treat the one-month mark as your real cut-off, not the printed expiry date.

Can I renew my PSIRA certificate online application?

Yes. Renewal is fully online and you do not need to visit a branch. Note that the corporate site at www.psira.co.za is for information, while the actual renewal happens on the digital services portal at digitalservices.psira.co.za. Log in there with your credentials to access your account and renew your PSIRA certificate.

How long does it take PSIRA to expire?

Security officer certificates expire 24 months from the date of issue. Security business certificates run on a shorter cycle and must be renewed every 12 months. Your ID card is a separate document from your certificate, with its own renewal, so check both.

What Happens If Your PSIRA Certificate Lapses

Working while your certificate has lapsed is a criminal matter, not just an administrative one. Section 20(1) of the Act says nobody may render a security service for reward unless registered, and section 38(3)(a) sets the penalty: a fine or imprisonment of up to five years on a first conviction, and up to ten years on a second or subsequent conviction, or both.

One point worth understanding clearly, because it is widely misreported. A lapsed certificate is not the same thing as being deregistered. Suspension and withdrawal of registration require the Authority to act, in writing, following proper administrative process under section 26. The renewal regulation reaches the certificate itself, not your registration status. That said, you still cannot legally work on a lapsed certificate, so renew it rather than testing the distinction.

Getting a Printed Certificate

Your certificate is digital by default. You can preview it on your profile, but you cannot print or download the digital version. The QR code on the preview is what employers scan to verify you.

If you want a physical copy, pay the extra R75 for an ink certificate. All PSIRA branches can print them, ink certificates can be certified, and every collection needs an online booking in advance. If your personal details change, you pay R75 again for a reissued ink certificate.

Employers checking your status do not need a printed copy at all. They can verify individual certificates at digitalservices.psira.co.za/verify-user/4 and business certificates at digitalservices.psira.co.za/verify-user/8, or simply print the proof of registration from the PSIRA app or website, which includes your photo.

The New Competency Certificate

From April 2026, PSIRA also issues a Competency Certificate. It confirms that you completed prescribed training at a specific point in time and can be verified through the official PSIRA verification platform.

Do not confuse it with your registration certificate. The Competency Certificate complements your registration, it does not replace it, and it does not replace your renewal obligations either. Printing it is optional, and each printed copy carries its own fee since certificates are issued per course.
